The article argues that European history is not a unified entity but a dynamic and diverse field, shaped by various perspectives, national contexts, and political realities. Despite theoretical consensus on the importance of transnational perspectives, national introspection remains dominant in European historiography. This persistence of the nation-state as the primary unit of analysis hinders the development of a truly integrated and nuanced understanding of European history. It is necessary to deconstruct Eurocentric biases, embrace transnational and comparative approaches, and move beyond the limitations of the nation-state as a primary unit of analysis. Ultimately, the authors advocate for a more inclusive and multilayered approach to European history, one that acknowledges its complex and interconnected nature within a global context. Thus understood, European history remains relevant in an age of globalization. It offers valuable insights into the diverse historical experiences and political realities shaping contemporary Europe. By employing transnational and comparative methodologies, historians can challenge simplistic narratives and contribute to a more nuanced understanding of Europe's complex past and present. Резюме: Подводя итоги совместного исследовательского проекта ЕвроДебат (EuropeDebate), авторы статьи обсуждают настоящее и будущее европейской истории как сферы исследований. SUMMARY: This article examines Franz Boas's connections with the Russian Empire and the early Soviet Union through his collaborations with Russian and Soviet anthropologists, especially the ethnotroika – Vladimir Jochelson, Vladimir Bogoras, and Lev Shternberg. Boas mentored these anthropologists during the Jesup North Pacific Expedition at the turn of the twentieth century but remained largely indifferent to the political landscape of the Russian Empire. However, Boas's stance changed with the advent of the Soviet Union. He saw the Soviet project as a scientific experiment and positively assessed Soviet policies, especially indigenization. This led him to initiate institutional collaborations, including advocating for student exchange programs and proposing joint expeditions involving Soviet scholars. Despite growing evidence of political repression and ideological control within Soviet anthropology, Boas maintained a selectively positive outlook toward the USSR. He downplayed negative reports, rationalized the suppression of dissenting views, and refrained from public criticism, even as his Soviet colleagues faced persecution. Boas's unwavering support for the Soviet experiment was rooted in his evolving political beliefs, which shifted from liberalism to a more socialist orientation. He contrasted the perceived social progress and anti-racism of the USSR with the shortcomings of Western democracies, particularly the United States. By the late 1930s, Boas's ideological convictions ultimately compromised his anthropological objectivity. He prioritized the abstract ideal of Soviet socialism over the lived realities of his Soviet colleagues and the principles of intellectual freedom. Only in the final year of his life, influenced by the changing geopolitical landscape of World War II, did Boas begin to adopt a more nuanced and critical perspective on the USSR and its place in the global order. Instead, the author argues for a more nuanced understanding of the situation by examining Chinese perspectives and incorporating the Chinese dimension into the historical narrative. The article analyzes a range of published sources, including poetry, sociopolitical commentaries, and news reports, to demonstrate how Chinese intellectuals viewed Russian émigrés as a reflection of their own internal political struggles and societal anxieties, ultimately shaping their attitudes toward Russian immigrants as a source of both sympathy and resentment. The author contends that Chinese intellectuals did not perceive Russians as immigrants in the modern sense, but as foreigners, from whom the Chinese could learn lessons about national salvation. Резюме: Автор статьи исследует меняющееся отношение китайских интеллектуалов к эмигрантам из России в период Китайской Республики, уделяя особое внимание периоду 1920–1940-х гг. На основе анализа опубликованных источников – включая поэзию, социально-политические памфлеты и газетные репортажи – статья показывает, что китайские интеллектуалы проецировали на российских эмигрантов в первую очередь собственное беспокойство по поводу проблем китайского общества. Именно этим определялись симпатии и критика, высказываемые в адрес российской диаспоры. Автор утверждает, что ее представители воспринимались китайскими интеллектуалами не как иммигранты в современном смысле слова, а как иностранцы, чей пример позволял извлечь исторические уроки.
