Joint Radar and Communications (JRC) can implement two Radio Frequency (RF) functions using a single of resources, providing significant hardware, power and spectrum savings for wireless systems requiring both functions. Frequency-Hopping (FH) MIMO radar is a popular candidate for JRC because the achieved communication symbol rate can greatly exceed the radar pulse repetition frequency. However, practical transceiver imperfections can cause many existing theoretical designs to fail. In this work, we reveal for the first time the non-trivial impact of hardware imperfections on FH-MIMO JRC and model the impact analytically. We also design new waveforms and correspondingly develop a low-complexity algorithm to jointly estimate the hardware imperfections of unsynchronized receiver. In addition, using low-cost software-defined radios and Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products, we build the first FH-MIMO JRC experimental platform with simultaneous over-the-air radar and communication validation. Confirmed by simulation and experimental results, the proposed designs achieve high performance for both radar and communications.

Practical frequency-hopping MIMO joint radar communications: design and experiment

Federated learning for edge computing is a promising solution in the data booming era, which leverages the computation ability of each edge device to train local models and only shares the model gradients to the central server. However, the frequently transmitted local gradients could also leak the participants' private data. To protect the privacy of local training data, lots of cryptographic-based Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning (PPFL) schemes have been proposed. However, due to the constrained resource nature of mobile devices and complex cryptographic operations, traditional PPFL schemes fail to provide efficient data confidentiality and lightweight integrity verification simultaneously. To tackle this problem, we propose a Verifiable Privacy-preserving Federated Learning scheme (VPFL) for edge computing systems to prevent local gradients from leaking over the transmission stage. Firstly, we combine the Distributed Selective Stochastic Gradient Descent (DSSGD) method with Paillier homomorphic cryptosystem to achieve the distributed encryption functionality, so as to reduce the computation cost of the complex cryptosystem. Secondly, we further present an online/offline signature method to realize the lightweight gradients integrity verification, where the offline part can be securely outsourced to the edge server. Comprehensive security analysis demonstrates the proposed VPFL can achieve data confidentiality, authentication, and integrity. At last, we evaluate both communication overhead and computation cost of the proposed VPFL scheme, the experimental results have shown VPFL has low computation costs and communication overheads while maintaining high training accuracy.

VPFL: A verifiable privacy-preserving federated learning scheme for edge computing systems

The mobile data traffic has been exponentially growing during the last several decades.This was enabled by the densification of the network infrastructure in terms of increased cell density (i.e., Ultra-Dense Network (UDN)) and/or the increased number of active antennas per Access Point (AP) (i.e., massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (mMIMO)).However, neither UDN nor mMIMO will meet the increasing demand for the data rate of the Sixth Generation (6G) wireless communications due to the inter-cell interference and large quality-of-service variations.Cell-Free (CF) mMIMO, which combines the best aspects of UDN and mMIMO, is viewed as a key solution to this issue.In such systems, each User Equipment (UE) is served by a preferred set of surrounding APs cooperatively.In this paper, we provide a survey of the state-of-the-art literature on CF mMIMO.As a starting point, the significance and the basic properties of CF mMIMO are highlighted.We then present the canonical framework to discuss the essential details (i.e., transmission procedure and mathematical system model).Next, we provide a deep look at the resource allocation and signal processing problems related to CF mMIMO and survey the up-to-date schemes and algorithms.After that, we discuss the practical issues in implementing CF mMIMO and point out the potential future directions.Finally, we conclude this paper with a summary of the key lessons learned in this field.

A survey on user-centric cell-free massive MIMO systems

Pervasive IoT applications enable us to perceive, analyze, control, and optimize the traditional physical systems. Recently, security breaches in many IoT applications have indicated that IoT applications may put the physical systems at risk. Severe resource constraints and insufficient security design are two major causes of many security problems in IoT applications. As an extension of the cloud, the emerging edge computing with rich resources provides us a new venue to design and deploy novel security solutions for IoT applications. Although there are some research efforts in this area, edge-based security designs for IoT applications are still in its infancy. This paper aims to present a comprehensive survey of existing IoT security solutions at the edge layer as well as to inspire more edge-based IoT security designs. We first present an edge-centric IoT architecture. Then, we extensively review the edge-based IoT security research efforts in the context of security architecture designs, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, authentication and authorization protocols, and privacy-preserving mechanisms. Finally, we propose our insight into future research directions and open research issues.

A survey of edge computing-based designs for IoT security

Smart home devices are vulnerable to a variety of attacks. The matter gets more complicated when a number of devices collaborate to launch a colluding attack (e.g. Distributed-Denial-of-Service (DDoS)) in a network (e.g., Smart home). To handle these attacks, most studies have hitherto proposed authentication protocols that cannot necessarily be implemented in devices, especially during Device-to-Device (D2D) interactions. Tapping into the potential of Ethereum blockchain and smart contracts, this work proposes a lightweight authentication mechanism that enables safe D2D interactions in a smart home. The Ethereum blockchain enables the implementation of a decentralized prototype as well as a peer-to-peer distributed ledger system. The work also uses a single server queuing system model and the authentication mechanism to curtail DDoS attacks by controlling the number of service requests in the system. The simulation was conducted twenty times, each with varying number of devices chosen at random (ranging from 1 to 30). Each requester device sends an arbitrary request with a unique resource requirement at a time. This is done to measure the system's consistency across a variety of device capabilities. The experimental results show that the proposed protocol not only prevents colluding attacks, but also outperforms the benchmark protocols in terms of computational cost, message processing, and response times.
