ACS SENSORS is a peer-reviewed research journal dedicated to disseminating new and original knowledge in all aspects of sensor science related to the selective detection of chemical or biological species or processes. Articles may cover advancements in sensing concepts applicable to various analytes or report applications of existing sensing concepts using new approaches or analytes. Submitted manuscripts should demonstrate the use of sensors in complex samples, establish their applicability, and relate sensor performance to existing analytical methods. Papers may focus on the commercialization of sensors or the development of sensors aimed at providing new scientific insights. Articles may be purely theoretical regarding sensing or may report experimental results.

It is well-known that metal-oxide semiconductors (MOS) have significant gas sensing activity and are widely used in harmful gas monitoring in various environments. With the rapid development of new energy vehicles, the monitoring of the gas composition and concentration in LIB has become an effective way to avoid safety problems. However, the study of typical electrolyte solvent detection, such as EMC and DMC detection by the MOS sensor, is still in its infancy. Here, the SnO2 nanoboxes are synthesized by coordination dissolution using cubic Cu2O as the template, and its sensor shows high sensitivity (0.27 to 10 ppb EMC), excellent response (32.46 to 20 ppm EMC), and superior selectivity. Additionally, the sensor possesses fast and clear response to lithium-ion battery (LIB) leakage simulation tests, suggesting that it should be a promising candidate for LIB safety monitors. These sensing performances are attributed to large specific surface area, small grain size, and high size/thickness ratio of nanoboxes. More importantly, DFT calculations confirm the adsorption of EMC on the surface of the SnO2 nanoboxes, and the EMC decomposition processes catalyzed by SnO2 are deduced by in situ FTIR and GC-MS.

High Response and Selectivity of the SnO2 Nanobox Gas Sensor for Ethyl Methyl Carbonate Leakage Detection in a Lithium-Ion battery

We present a straightforward design approach to develop DNA-based light-up aptasensors. We performed the first systematic comparison of DNA fluorescent light-up aptamers (FLAPs), revealing key differences in affinity and specificity for their target dyes. Based on our analysis, two light-up aptamers emerged with remarkable specificity, fluorescence enhancement, and functionality in diverse environments. We then established generalizable design rules to couple the DNA FLAPs to small molecule-binding aptamers, creating 13 novel aptaswitches with reliable turn-on or turn-off aptaswitching in a dose–response manner. We developed new aptaswitches for ochratoxin A and ATP biosensing with up to a seven-fold response and low background. Finally, we demonstrated the orthogonal activity of our aptaswitch platforms. As a result, we introduce fluorescent light-up aptaswitches for one-pot detection of different targets in diverse sample matrices.

Design of Label-Free DNA Light-Up Aptaswitches for Multiplexed Biosensing

The problems of lithium-ion battery (LIB) failure have attracted growing attention since flammable and explosive electrolyte leakage might lead to serious consequences. However, due to the redox-neutral and volatile nature of main electrolyte components, such as dimethyl carbonate (DMC), trace leakages are difficult to detect. Therefore, research on LIB electrolyte sensors is urgent and lacking. Herein, sensors based on rare-earth Nd-doped SnO2 nanofibers are reported for detecting DMC vapor in LIB. The excellent sensitivity (distinct response to 20 ppb DMC), high response (∼38.13–50 ppm DMC), and superior selectivity and stability of 3%Nd-SnO2 suggest that it should be a promising candidate for LIB safety monitors. Meanwhile, it also shows clear and rapid response during the LIB-leakage real-time detection experiment. The doping of Nd endows SnO2 with more oxygen vacancy defects. In addition, the highly active Nd sites greatly enhanced the adsorption energy of DMC on SnO2. All of these features contribute to the improvement of DMC-sensing performances.

Ultrasensitive Detection for Lithium-Ion Battery Electrolyte Leakage by Rare-Earth Nd-Doped SnO2 Nanofibers

The development of cost-effective and versatile sensing system for simultaneous and rapid quantitation of multiple targets is highly demanded for environmental surveillance, food safety inspection, home healthcare, etc. This work reports on (1) paper-based microarrays relying on fluorescence turn-off of carbon nanodots (CDs) for analyte recognition and (2) a stand-alone smartphone-based portable reader (SBR) installed with a custom-designed APP (SBR-App), which can accurately and reproducibly acquire fluorescence change from the microarray chip, automatically report the results, generate and share the reports via wireless network. Simultaneous detection of Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+ in the Pearl River water samples was achieved with the reported sensing system. End-user operation is limited to pipet samples to the microarray chip, insert the chip to the SBR, and open the SBR-App to acquire an image 5 min after sample introduction. There is no requirement for complicated sample pre-treatment and expensive equipment except for a smartphone. This versatile and cost-effective smartphone-based sensing system featured with reliability and simplicity is ideally suited for user- and eco-friendly point-of-need detection in resource-constrained environments.

A Smartphone-Based Sensing System for On-Site Quantitation of Multiple Heavy Metal Ions Using Fluorescent Carbon Nanodots-Based Microarrays

Rapid and inexpensive serological tests for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies are needed to conduct population-level seroprevalence surveillance studies and can improve diagnostic reliability when used in combination with viral tests. Here, we report a novel low-cost electrochemical capillary-flow device to quantify IgG antibodies targeting SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid proteins (anti-N antibody) down to 5 ng/mL in low-volume (10 μL) human whole blood samples in under 20 min. No sample preparation is needed as the device integrates a blood-filtration membrane for on-board plasma extraction. The device is made of stacked layers of a hydrophilic polyester and double-sided adhesive films, which create a passive microfluidic circuit that automates the steps of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The sample and reagents are sequentially delivered to a nitrocellulose membrane that is modified with a recombinant SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein. When present in the sample, anti-N antibodies are captured on the nitrocellulose membrane and detected via chronoamperometry performed on a screen-printed carbon electrode. As a result of this quantitative electrochemical readout, no result interpretation is required, making the device ideal for point-of-care (POC) use by non-trained users. Moreover, we show that the device can be coupled to a near-field communication potentiostat operated from a smartphone, confirming its true POC potential. The novelty of this work resides in the integration of sensitive electrochemical detection with capillary-flow immunoassay, providing accuracy at the point of care. This novel electrochemical capillary-flow device has the potential to aid the diagnosis of infectious diseases at the point of care.

Electrochemical Capillary-Flow Immunoassay for Detecting Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Nucleocapsid Protein Antibodies at the Point of Care

Raman spectroscopy has revolutionized the field of chemical biology by providing detailed chemical and compositional information with minimal sample preparation. Despite its advantages, the technique suffers from low throughput due to the weak Raman effect, necessitating long acquisition times and expensive equipment. This limitation is particularly acute in time-sensitive applications like bioprocess monitoring and dynamic studies. Compressive sensing offers a promising solution by reducing the burden on measurement hardware, lowering costs, and decreasing measurement times. It allows for the collection of sparse data, which can be computationally reconstructed later. This paper explores the practical application of compressive sensing in spontaneous Raman spectroscopy across various biological samples. We demonstrate its benefits in scenarios requiring portable hardware, rapid acquisition, and minimal storage, such as skin hydration prediction and cellular studies involving drug molecules. Our findings highlight the potential of compressive sensing to overcome traditional limitations of Raman spectroscopy, paving the way for broader adoption in biological research and clinical diagnostics.

To Acquire or Not to Acquire: Evaluating Compressive Sensing for Raman Spectroscopy in Biology

The pursuit of efficient and accurate human–computer interface design urgently requires high-performance sensors with pressure sensitivity, a wide detection range, and excellent cycling stability. Herein, a biomimetic honeycomb-like Ti3C2Tx MXene/bacterial cellulose (BC) aerogel with a negative Poisson's ratio (ν = −0.14) synthesized from the bidirectional freeze-drying method is used as the active material for a flexible pressure sensor, which exhibits high sensitivity (20.14 kPa–1), fast response time (100 ms), excellent mechanical durability (5000 cycles), and a low detection limit (responding to a grain of rice weighing about 0.022 g). Moreover, when assembled into the sandwich-structured bending sensor with the aerogel layer at just 0.8 mm in thickness, the aerogel-based device has a wide angular detection range (2.7–156.3°), high sensitivity (0.47 deg–1), and good robustness, proving outstanding electromechanical performance. Significantly, a smart glove consisting of five bending sensors fixed to the proximal knuckles and a flexible circuit board as the signal processing unit was designed for the identification of the shape, demonstrating its promising applications in the field of human–computer interaction.

The reference electrode's performance is essential for ensuring the accuracy of electrochemical sensors in marine environments. Yet, the many existing reference electrodes can exhibit sensitivity to salinity variations, potentially leading to inaccuracies in the measurement process. Herein, we have designed a reliable solid-state reference electrode by introducing SiOx-stabilized 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide ([C8mim+] [Ntf2–]) into a P(VdF-co-HFP) matrix with a SPEEK/[C8mim+] [Ntf2–] coated Ag/AgCl as substrate. The SPEEK/[C8mim+] [Ntf2–] coating protects the AgCl substrate, and the incorporation of SiOx improves the compatibility of the IL with the polymer matrix, thereby increasing the electrode's resistance to interference and extending its long-term stability and lifespan. The developed reference electrode showed a stable and rapid response, with potential variations of less than 0.7 mV across various salinity solutions, including practical seawater, lake water, and their mixture samples. During extended periods of 18 days in deionized water and artificial seawater, the electrode demonstrated negligible potential drifts of 0.36 and 0.14 mV/d, respectively. Notably, the electrode could maintain a stable potential even after being stored in a preservative solution for 67 days. Furthermore, the electrode showed a stable response to withstand pressures of up to 100 MPa, covering the vast majority of the seafloor. This innovative reference electrode is capable of maintaining a stable reference potential across various salinities, ionic strength, and full ocean depth, making it versatile for use in diverse aquatic environments, underscoring its significant potential for advancing oceanographic research and enabling new insights into the unexplored depths of oceans.
