Background and Aim: Auditory temporal resolution skill is calculated according to the minimum required time to analyze or integrate acoustic events. This skill, which is essential for speech perception, was evaluated by gap detection tests. The aim of this study was to determine the presence or absence of any differences between the right and left ear in the gap detection test. Methods: After performing auditory tests to rule out any hearing loss or auditory processing disorders, the gap detection test was administered to 40 adults. Results: Gap detection thresholds were 5.35 ms and 5.30 ms in the right and left ear, respectively, and the average correct answers percentages were 69.03% and 68.03% in the right and left ear, respectively. According to these data, results were similar for both ears. Conclusion: There is no laterality in temporal resolution tasks. However, we cannot generalize the results of the present study as being applicable to the whole society.

INVESTIGATION OF TEMPORAL RESOLUTION LATERALITY

Abstract Background and Aim: Digits are suitable materials for hearing assessment of wide range of patients including children and adults with various language abilities. Single monosyllabic 1-10 digits in triplet formant have been used for measuring speech recognition threshold in signal-to-noise ratio. The purpose of this study was to determine signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) needed for 50 percent correct recognition of Persian monosyllabic digits (1-10) in multi-talker babble noise. Methods: Thirty unique triplet set of nine 1-10 monosyllabic Persian digits were created and mixed with multi-talker babble noise. Signal-to-noise ratio varied from -18 to +3 dB in 3-dB steps. Digits were presented binaurally to 17 normal hearing young adults aged 18-25 years. Speech recognition threshold in SNR (SRTsnr) was measured by Spearman-Karber equation and probit regression method. Results: Mean SRTsnr of Persian digits, had minimum value of -12.7 dB for digit 3 and maximum value of -6.8 dB for digit 9. Mean (standard deviation) of SRTsnr was -9.5 (2.1) dB. There was no statistically significant difference between mean SRTsnr of the males and the females for all digits (p>0.05). Conclusion: Persian 1-10 monosyllabic digits are not homogeneous in terms of SNR needed for reaching 50% correct recognition. Mean SRTsnr of Persian digits is comparable to German and Polish digits but is higher than English digits. AUDITORY RECOGNITION OF PERSIAN DIGITS IN MULTI-TALKER BABBLE NOISE: A PRELIMINARY STUDY

Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorders (ANSD) are new classification which was proposed in 2008 by Colorado Children’s Hospital Group and defined as normal otoacoustic emissions and absent ABRs in newborn. In our long term follow up study, hearing of ANSD are changed into three types. Type I is normal OAE and normal ABR (normal hearing), Type II is absent OAE and absent ABR (profound sensoryneural hearing loss), Type III is normal OAE and absent ABR (true auditory neuropathy). However, still complications of vestibular problems in ANSD are not known so far. Historically, in the same year of 1996, a new type of bilateral hearing disorder was reported by Kaga et al. and Starr et al. in different journals. Auditory nerve disease paper was published in the Scandinavian Audiology by Dr. Kaga and Auditory Neuropathy paper was published in Brain. At present, these different terms are considered to be identical in pathophygiology. The auditory nerve disease or auditory neuropathy is a disorder characterized by mild-to-moderate pure-tone hearing loss, poor speech discrimination, absent ABR but normal cochlear outer hair cell function revealed by normal OAE and –SP of Electrocochleography. A variety of processes and etiologies are thought to be involved in the pathophygiology. Most of the reports in the literature discuss auditory profiles and gene mutation of OTOF or OPA1 of patients only but not pathophygiology. Auditory nerve components consist of cochlear nerve, superior vestibular nerve and inferior vestibular nerve. My question is which nerve of these auditory nerve components is involved in AN? Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials: do we know all the basics?

Background and Aim: Aging is accompanied with changes in cognitive capacities. In spite of advances in neural imaging technologies, there is not a straightforward met hod to observe cognitive functions. For assessing brain functions, researchers mainly use psychometric tests. The aim of this study was using consonant - vowel (CV) dichotic test as a non invasive behavioral test for auditory attention (focused and divided a ttention) and language laterality evaluation in young and old age groups. Methods: In the present cross - sectional study, Persian version of consonant - vowel dichotic test was performed on 28 young subjects within 18 28 and 27 old subjects within 60 - 80 year - old age range of both genders. All subjects had normal peripheral hearing and were right handed. Right and left ear scores were compared under three different attention conditions: divided or non - forced attention, attention to the right ear, attention to t he left ear. Results: In non - forced condition there was no significant difference for the right ear score between the two age groups (p=0.97) but the left ear score was statistically different (p ≤0.001). In addition, there was a significant difference betw een two ears’ scores in attention to right/ left ear for both age groups (p ≤0.001). Conclusion: In the older group under divided attention condition, the left ear score was lower than the younger group and they had problem in paying attention especially to the left ear stimuli. In the older group, ear asymmetry for consonant - vowel dichotic test score w as higher than the younger one.

Auditory attention evaluation in the elderly using a Persian version of consonant-vowel dichotic test

Background and Aim: Central auditory processing disorder (C)APD can affect academic, social and communicative status of its patients whether children or adults. One of the most important skills involved in these disorders is decoding. The rehabilitation method for the decoding deficit in Buffalo auditory processing model is the phonemic synthesis program (PSP). In this study, the Persian version of PSP was developed and then the efficacy of this method in the rehabilitation of Persian children with (C)APD was evaluated. Methods: This study was conducted in two stages. At first, the Persian version of PSP was prepared in accordance with its English version. Then, a child with (C)APD according to the results of Persian versions of Phonemic Synthesis Test (P-PST) and staggered spondaic words (P-SSW) was rehabilitated with this method. The treatment was given to the patient three sessions a week, each session lasted 30 minutes. Data were analyzed using visual analysis and non-parametric tests. Results: During the treatment phase, a significant improvement was seen in P-PST and P-SSW test results (p<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the study results, the Persian version of PSP improves decoding, tolerance fading memory, and organization disorders.
