Aiming to address the bone regeneration and cancer therapy functionalities in one single material, in this study, we developed a dual-functional theragenerative three-dimensional (3D) aerogel-based composite scaffold from hybridization of photo-cross-linked silk fibroin (SF) biopolymer with MXene (Ti3C2) two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. To fabricate the scaffold, we first develop a dual-cross-linked SF-based aerogel scaffold through 3D printing and photo-cross-linking of the self-assembly-driven methacrylate-modified SF (SF-MA) gel with controlled pore size, macroscopic geometry, and mechanical stability. In the next step, to endow a remotely controlled photothermal antiosteosarcoma ablation function to fabricated aerogel scaffold, MXene 2D nanosheets with strong near-infrared (NIR) photon absorption properties were integrated into the 3D-printed scaffolds. While 3D-printed MXene-modified dual-cross-linked SF composite scaffolds can mediate the in vitro growth and proliferation of preosteoblastic cell lines, they also endow a strong photothermal effect upon remote irradiation with NIR laser but also significantly stimulate bone mineral deposition on the scaffold surface. Additionally, besides the local release of the anticancer model drug, the generated heat (45–53 °C) mediated the photothermal ablation of cancer cells. The developed aerogel-based composites and chosen therapeutic techniques are thought to render a significant breakthrough in biomaterials' future clinical applications.

Ultrathin, Lightweight Materials Enabled Wireless Data and Power Transmission in Chip-Less Flexible Electronics

Over the past decade, the therapeutic potential of nanomaterials as novel drug delivery systems complementing conventional pharmacology has been widely acknowledged. Among these nanomaterials, lipid-based nanoparticles (LNPs) have shown remarkable pharmacological performance and promising therapeutic outcomes, thus gaining substantial interest in preclinical and clinical research. In this review, we introduce the main types of LNPs used in drug formulations such as liposomes, nanoemulsions, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers, and lipid polymer hybrid nanoparticles, focusing on their main physicochemical properties and therapeutic potential. We discuss computational studies and modeling techniques to enhance the understanding of how LNPs interact with therapeutic cargo and to predict the potential effectiveness of such interactions in therapeutic applications. We also analyze the benefits and drawbacks of various LNP production techniques such as nanoprecipitation, emulsification, evaporation, thin film hydration, microfluidic-based methods, and an impingement jet mixer. Additionally, we discuss the major challenges associated with industrial development, including stability and sterilization, storage, regulatory compliance, reproducibility, and quality control. Overcoming these challenges and facilitating regulatory compliance represent the key steps toward LNP's successful commercialization and translation into clinical settings.

Lipid-Based Nanoparticles for Drug/Gene Delivery: An Overview of the Production Techniques and Difficulties Encountered in Their Industrial Development

In recent years, transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-based electronics have experienced a prosperous stage of development, and some considerable applications include field-effect transistors, photodetectors, and light-emitting diodes. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD), a typical bottom-up approach for preparing 2D materials, is widely used to synthesize large-area 2D TMD films and is a promising method for mass production to implement them for practical applications. In this review, we investigate recent progress in controlled CVD growth of 2D TMDs, aiming for controlled nucleation and orientation, using various CVD strategies such as choice of precursors or substrates, process optimization, and system engineering. We then survey different patterning methods, such as surface patterning, metal precursor patterning, and postgrowth sulfurization/selenization/tellurization, to mass produce heterostructures for device applications. With these strategies, various well-designed architectures, such as wafer-scale single crystals, vertical and lateral heterostructures, patterned structures, and arrays, are achieved. In addition, we further discuss various electronics made from CVD-grown TMDs to demonstrate the diverse application scenarios. Finally, perspectives regarding the current challenges of controlled CVD growth of 2D TMDs are also suggested.

Strategies for Controlled Growth of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides by Chemical Vapor Deposition for Integrated Electronics

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are becoming increasingly ubiquitous in various applications at the interface with biological systems. However, their widespread use is hampered by the scarcity of electron-conducting (n-type) backbones and the poor performance and stability of the existing n-OECTs. Here, we introduce organic salts as a solution additive to improve the transduction capability, shelf life, and operational stability of n-OECTs. We demonstrate that the salt-cast devices present a 10-fold increase in transconductance and achieve at least one year-long stability, while the pristine devices degrade within four months of storage. The salt-added films show improved backbone planarity and greater charge delocalization, leading to higher electronic charge carrier mobility. These films show a distinctly porous morphology where the interconnectivity is affected by the salt type, responsible for OECT speed. The salt-based films display limited changes in morphology and show lower water uptake upon electrochemical doping, a possible reason for the improved device cycling stability. Our work provides a new and easy route to improve n-type OECT performance and stability, which can be adapted for other electrochemical devices with n-type films operating at the aqueous electrolyte interface.

Salts as Additives: A Route to Improve Performance and Stability of n-Type Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Polymersomes have the potential to become the next generation of vesicular drug delivery systems. Their high chemical versatility and in certain cases higher membrane stability than liposomes raised the high hopes for polymersomes as a drug carrier, but the clinical translation has been slow. To jump-start translation, there is a need for meticulous characterization and reporting of key parameters of polymersome formulations. Regulatory authorities have provided valuable insights on critical quality attributes of liposomes in their guidance document on liposomal nanosimilars. Inspired by this guidance document, this Perspective proposes necessary characterization of polymersomes (hallmarks) regarding their chemical composition, physicochemical properties, drug release profile, stability, stimuli responsiveness, and pharmacokinetics and biodistribution.

Advancements in heterogeneous electrocatalysis are essential for the transition to a sustainable future. However, current catalysts often face limitations in activity, selectivity, stability, and cost-effectiveness, highlighting the need for a detailed understanding of catalyst behavior to construct rational design strategies. This perspective focuses on the role of well-defined materials, particularly ordered intermetallics, in enhancing catalytic performance. Ordered intermetallic materials enable precise control over geometric and electronic properties, which are critical for tailoring reactivity. Their structured atomic configurations not only allow for rational control of catalytic activity but also integrate seamlessly with computational models, facilitating the design of improved materials. Additionally, we examine future research directions for intermetallics in electrocatalysis, identifying opportunities for significant breakthroughs in the field.

The Essential Role of Well-Defined Materials in Assessing Electrocatalyst Structure and Function

This work presents the synthesis, characterization, and photocatalytic performance of a sophisticated photocatalytic paper comprising Au@SnO2 core@shell nanocrystals immobilized on cellulose nanofibers (CNF). The Au@SnO2/CNF nanocrystal immobilized paper (NIP) is employed as photocatalysts for degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under simulated sunlight irradiation. Results reveal that the Au@SnO2/CNF NIP exhibits a notable photocatalytic activity driven by efficient charge separation at the interface of Au and SnO2. Mechanistic insights into the degradation process indicate that photoexcited electrons in the Au core reduce dissolved oxygen to form superoxide radicals, while photogenerated holes in the SnO2 valence band oxidize water to generate hydroxyl radicals. These reactive oxygen species, along with the separated holes themselves, contribute to RhB degradation. Importantly, the Au@SnO2/CNF NIP demonstrates remarkable recyclability toward RhB degradation, retaining 88% of its initial activity after 18 degradation cycles, highlighting its potential for sustainable environmental remediation applications.
