Orbital mucormycosis is an opportunistic fungal disease with high morbidity and mortality. Its pathogenesis is a complex interaction between fungal invasive mechanisms and host factors, including cell surface receptors, platelets, phagocytic cells, and serum iron and glucose levels. Angioinvasion and vascular occlusion play key roles in the clinical manifestation of orbital mucormycosis.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA, 1990) changed the landscape for individuals with disabilities significantly. Its ramifications can be seen in the ramps and handicapped parking spots outside almost every public building in the United States. This article will give a brief outline of the components of the ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA, 2008), clarify how disability is defined under that law, and give the eye-care practitioner guidance on determining whether a patient qualifies for accommodations under the ADAAA. We will delineate the accommodations that would be appropriate for a patient’s impairment, and describe ethical advocacy for a patient who wants to request accommodations.

Visual Disability in the Context of the Americans with Disabilities Act

Benign essential blepharospasm is a focal dystonia in which patients present with forceful, involuntary closure of muscles surrounding the eyes. Spasms can render these patients functionally blind and can negatively affect patients’ quality of life. Although no cure exists for blepharospasm, numerous medical and surgical treatment options have been employed to manage symptoms. This article covers important concepts regarding the clinical diagnosis and manifestations of blepharospasm and discusses important considerations regarding effective management including botulinum toxins, oral medications, and surgical interventions.

This article reviews IEM that have corneal findings with varying degrees of symptoms that may include decreased visual acuity, eye pain, or ocular irritation.

Depositions and degenerative diseases of the cornea, sclera, and conjunctiva encompass a wide spectrum of pathologies. Degenerative diseases are common and usually result from physiologic changes related to aging, long-standing environmental insults, or systemic disease. Depositions typically are related to drug exposure or systemic illness. In this article, we review the clinical characteristics, pathophysiology, and treatment options of various depositions and degenerations of the conjunctiva, cornea, and sclera. Clinicians need to be able to recognize these conditions, as an appropriate ophthalmologic diagnosis may uncover an undiagnosed systemic disorder.

Approach to Depositions and Degenerations of the Cornea, Conjunctiva, and Sclera

Eyelid tumors can be both benign and malignant. The management of these pathologies varies according to the type of the lesions. Previously, the most widely accepted treatment option was surgical excision of the lesion. However, with time, as the knowledge in understanding of these diseases has increased, so have the treatment options. Multiple new avenues have opened other than surgery. In this article, the authors discuss the recent advances in the medical management of eyelid tumors.
